How Coaching Can Help You

Sometimes, you just find that life is not turning out the way you want it to. Things are happening (or maybe not happening) which can cause you to feel frustrated, fed up, disillusioned, disappointed, unfulfilled and unhappy.

 

You know that you want to do something about it, you really, really, really do want to enjoy life again. Your friends and family have all given you advice about what you should do and what they would do if they were in your situation, but somehow that doesn’t feel right. You may have even tried reading some self-help books, and although you have picked up some great hints and tips, you can’t seem to find the motivation to apply them to help you move out of the rut.

 

You feel stuck. You feel that life is passing you by. You are simply going through the motions. You want some help, but the help from friends and family hasn’t made you feel any better. You feel that seeking outside help will somehow mean that you have failed yourself because you can't resolve your issues yourself.

 

The good news is that that really isn’t the case. It really is ok to ask for help - I did - and this is where coaching comes in. I was a single parent, stuck in a job I hated and thinking I had to stay in it because I had bills to pay. I had a bully for a boss and I wasn't able to say "no" to her. So I ended up working longer and longer hours for very little pay and seeing less and less of my children. It was only when I took part in an assertiveness course (ironically funded by my work!) that I finally saw the light. Part of the workshop included a 1-2-1 coaching session. During that coaching session I learned that I COULD say "no" and how to say it. I can honestly say that my life changed completely after that session and it's why I am so passionate about helping others who feel stuck find a way forward.

 

Just because you ask for help doesn’t mean you are “broken” and need “fixing”. Coaching isn’t about “fixing” you. People who come to be coached by me have just lost their way and need some space with someone who is non-judgmental and empathetic to give them a helping hand to get back on track.

It’s about really finding out what is currently stopping you from taking steps to improve and transform your current situation and helping you make choices to look at different aspects of your life in a different way. This creates a shift which in turn helps you to open up to making changes.

 

These changes can be subtle to start with, or they can be awesome – each client’s circumstances are different. Whatever the circumstances, however, if you put in the work, changes will be made which will make a difference to your life. Sometimes, the goal you thought you wanted to achieve changes as you move along your journey and you find out what you really, really really want.

 

I had a client who had a specific goal in mind, side step into something completely different which he found he loved and enjoyed and has made such a great difference to his life, to the extent that the original goal has been put on hold indefinitely.

 

So, by simply setting your intention, whether towards a particular goal or outcome, you have started the process towards change. The next step is to take action and make a commitment to yourself that you will work on the process.
